The Puppet Museum
Varna 9000, 5 Sheynovo Str.
The Puppet Museum is situated next to the State Puppet Theater – Varna. It was opened in 1985 and is the only one of this kind on the Balkan Peninsula. The exposition contains about 120 theatre puppets, sets elements of the most successful performances staged in the Varna Puppet Theater in the period 1952 - 1995. The numerous national and international awards and distinctions of the theater are exhibited in a special show case. The exposition presents the creative efforts of authors, directors, actors, artists, and constructors. It displays different techniques, styles and trends of leading Bulgarian stage designers like the architect Ivan Tsonev, Maia Petrova, Lubomir Tsakev, Maia Kuzova, Anna Pulieva, Angel Nedelchev, Kosta Ortodoksov, etc. Beside the traditional puppets such as marionettes, petrushki, puppets-masks, very interesting are the puppets made by Georgi Saravanov – founder of the theatre – which were used in the firsts plays staged more than 50 years ago. They are unique with their complex construction and mechanism – led by a wooden keyboard and strings. Part of the museum collection was presented on a special exhibition at the XII International Puppet Festival in Tolosa, Spain in 1994 and later in 2000.
